In 1918 Lunacharsky officially announced that the art should be based on an experiment – so that is where Ned Hoper history begins. But it actually took some time before five musicians’ (and professional sound producers’) craving for experiment with sound led them to create their own laboratory. They picked February 16th 2007 – the day of their first performance in the legendary Zoccolo club – as the band’s Birthday. Before that day their work didn’t go out of the studio walls where they were working on soundtracks and sound effects for more than 50 movies and TV series. Due to the exclusive set of instruments and peculiar approach to musical composition Ned Hoper found its place in St. Petersburg underground music. There is baritone instead of common guitar, acoustic drums inosculate with electronic, no bass guitar at all with analog bass synthesizer instead. Vocal, if used, is always transfigured with the help of various devices. Electric cello, flugelhorn, vocoder, theremin, few synthesizers, a whole bunch of guitar effects pedals – nH goes a great length for the right sound.
The musicians spent most of their time in the lab searching for the absolute form of music and they are seldom get in the public. Therefore every concert of Ned Hoper becomes an unique performance where musical part is reinforced by video scrutinously mixed from archive fragments of forgotten newsreels and movies. Enormous number of tools used in process sometimes overwhelms stages and the always lab-coated musicians should be playing among listeners, so everyone drifted into the sound alchemy.
Ned Hoper is always open to working with artists presenting other art forms. Thus the “Mystification” album was presented in the Museum of contemporary art Erarta in collaboration with the theatre company ПО THE DRYSTON (April 29, 2011).
“Mystification”, which was released in the beginning of 2011, is actually the first official album of nH. It is the record of the song experiments of the band: clever and expressive music in combination with intricate lyrics. The work lasted for two years in four studios including the legendary Dobrolet and Melodia. Within the same period of time the English version of ”Volga” was performed as a single.
In autumn 2011 Ned Hoper released an internet single “AIKIDO Op.27 N18” and than at the very special date 11.11.11 the second album “ELEVEN” was presented with eleven instrumental etudes from “20 Etudes before the end of summer” (Op.27). This material can’t fit any genre, it eclectically collects usually incompatible sound landscapes such as mute explosion of the Supernova, silence of collapsars, Schroedinger equation, hypothesis of the cosmic censure, eleven dimensions of atom, the strings theory… To make the presentation work the stage of the Zoccolo club was enlarged the first time in the club’s history!
In spring 2012 we got the third album “r.e.”. “r.e.” consists of seven repetitive etudes which is already known to our listeners by the concerts. These etudes are based on REPETITIVE TECHNIQUE and this technique gave us a lot of unexpected forms and sound.
